The Buddhist Channel

Undoubtedly there is a great awakening of Buddhism and Buddhist thought after the opening of the Buddhist channel. I wish this channel is made available locally rather than through the satellite TV only. The sermons of the erudite monks are most educative. The discussions, both by the monks and people, are very thought-provoking. The coverage of the Buddhist places of historical interest, specially of India, arouses a great interest.

However, there are certain aspects which I wish to note. I have been listening to the sermon, mostly from 9.00 pm to 10.00 pm. Some monks speak rapidly and give a large number of facts in the 45 minutes which makes sermons confusing. Some recite a lot of stanza in Pali. Pali, I am sure, is not understood by a majority of lay Buddhists, so I wish they would speak less in Pali. Even the Sinhala spoken is very heavy. I wish they would speak and preach in simple Sinhala.

A particularly noteworthy message that is given, prior to the preaching daily, is a advertisement that Buddhism is only for the intelligent. I wonder how far this is true as it shuts off a large number of people from studying and following Buddhism.
