Oman Air commences operations in SL

Thanks to recent amicable settlement between the Oman and Sri Lankan governments, Oman Air can commence their operations in Sri Lanka. The inaugural flight from Colombo to Muscat is scheduled for November 14th making Sri Lanka the airlines 32nd destination. Initially Oman Air will operate four weekly flights which will increase to daily flights by the summer of 2010.

Since its humble commencement in 1993 Oman Air has become the flagship carrier for the Sultanate of Oman’s Aviation sector. Considered a boutique airline in the premium segment, Oman Air offers passengers an outstanding Business and First Class service with the latest in communications and technology. "We ensure our customer’s high expectations are met" stated Gihan Karunaratne, Country Manager Oman Air – Sri Lanka and Maldives.

The airline currently operates direct international flights from Muscat to all major Gulf destinations, ten destinations in India, Pakistan, Cairo, Beirut, Amman, Bangladesh, London and Bangkok. A number of other European destinations were added over the last few months such as Frankfurt, Munich and Paris.

The fleet of New Generation Boeing 737-800 will be expanded over the next few months and Oman Air is hoping to fly to over 50 destinations worldwide by 2014, with a greater number of European destinations.

Promoting tourism between Sri Lanka, Oman and the Maldives is also a target of the airline. "Holidays in Sri Lanka will give Oman Air customers the chance to experience the charm of this tiny island in the Indian Ocean amidst all its scenic beauty, old world charm and laid back atmosphere", said Peter Hill, CEO Oman Air. The airline is one of many to come back to Colombo after the end of the countries long conflict. Sri Lanka is becoming a hot tourist destination and airlines such as Oman Air see the potential of putting Colombo and Sri Lanka back on their radar.
