Kalutara UC and PS sued for dumping garbage at Poharawatta

Several cases have been filed against the Pradeshiya Sabha of Kalutara and the Kalutara Urban Council for dumping garbage in a plot of land at Poharawatta, the Chairman of Kalutara Pradeshiya Sabha said at the monthly meeting held at the Kalutara Auditorium.

Gamini S. Kaviratna (UNP) said the garbage heap in Pohorawatta was a breeding ground for flies, and even the monk of a nearby temple had complained.

The chairman, who is at present imprisoned for misappropriation, was escorted by Prison officers and Police to the meeting.

The works superintendent said twelve residents of the area had filed cases against the UC and the Pradeshiya Sabha and the Asst. Commissioner of Local Government had instructed the two institutions to share the costs. He said the Central Environmental Authority had instructed them to cover the garbage, already dumped, with earth.

Gamini S. Kaviratna (UNP) said, "Pohorawatta is a great eye-sore to the people of Nagoda, and the Pradeshiya Sabha should consider an alternative remedial measure to avoid the breeding of mosquitoes and flies there."

The land was owned by the Kalutara UC and the Asst. Local Govt. Commissioner should be consulted on the matter.

Nalin Viraj (UNFA) said the protest by the public was reasonable and the works superintendent also had submitted a report regarding the matter. There was no possibility of drinking even a cup of tea within 500 meters of the Pohorawatta site, due to flies."

G. N. P. Perera, Chairman, said the council was ready to spend Rs. 100,000 to level the garbage dump.
