Genaral Sarath Fonseka would be the Common Opposition Candidate at the next Presidential Election and he knew what was expected of him to attract the Tamil National Alliance, the newly formed United National Front said yesterday.
Kandy District UNP MP, Lakshman Kirielle told The Island that Fonseka was fully aware of the conditions on which he would be the UNF candidate and in the process of assuring the Tamil parties that they could be equal partners in the UNF.
"All ends have been patched up and we are ready for either a Presidential Election of Parliamentary Election," he said. "It’s a matter of time before the JVP also endorses General Fonseka’s candidature as the UNF’s Presidential candidate."
The conditions put forward by Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for Fonseka to be the candidate are: he should reach an understanding with the TNA on issues concerning them, make a public announcement that the Executive Presidency will be abolished in the event of his election, that the TNA and JVP, will be given important portfolios in his Cabinet and appoint a caretaker government with him (Wickremesinghe) as Prime Minister.
Wickremesinghe said that Fonseka would also have to make a public statement on the resettlement of the IDP’s, currently in northern refugee camps.
