The North Central Provincial Council on Tuesday adopted a motion expressing displeasure at the Council’s leader of the Opposition, Attorney-at-Law Kasthuri Anuradhanayake, for alleged false statements he had made against the provincial education department. It was passed by a majority of six votes.
The motion was moved by Councillor M. Herath Banda and seconded by G. G. Chandrasena.
Speaking on the motion UNP Councillor Rohana Gamage said that such a motion was a breach of privilege of the Opposition Leader. Gamage said that the motion had been forwarded because the Leader of the Opposition exposed corruption in the Council and if such a motion was allowed to be debated it would set a bad precedent.
Following a lengthy debate, the motion was adopted with 16 members voting for and 10 against.
