Clash leads to closing of two Sri J’pura faculties
The Arts and Management faculties of the Sri Jayewardenepura University were closed indefinitely yesterday following a clash between two factions of students on Tuesday night. Ten students were injured and two of them were hospitalised.
As a precautionary measure to avoid any further clashes the university administration decided to close these two faculties, University sources said.
They said the students involved in the clash belonged to the JVP-led Students Council and SLFP led Nidahas Shishya Peramuna.
The university administration had to summon police and anti-riot squads brought the situation under control. Both student groups made complaints to the university administration against each other over the mini battle. The University Senate is contemplating tough action against the trouble makers.
A spokesman for the Students Council Daminda Pushpakumara alleged that SLFP-led students assaulted their members at the Management Faculty.
"In a TV programme a few days ago, government ministers and two students attached to the Nidahas Shishya Peramuna severely criticised the Students Council. We had not been invited for the programme and when our students went to query about it they were attacked,"the spokesman further said.He also said six students attached to the Students Council were hospitalised with injuries.
However, Director of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital Kalubowila, Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that 10 undergraduates came to the hospital with injuries and eight of them were discharged after treatment. The condition of two undergraduates who are warded currently is not serious, he further said.
