Govt spends Rs. 9.9 mn daily on food for IDPs

Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishard Bathiudeen yesterday informed Parliament that the government spends Rs. 9.9 million per day to supply food for the displaced persons.

Answering a question raised by JVP MP Ranaweera Pathirana, the Minister said that in addition to this sum, Rs. 472,000 is spent on A daily basis for other requirements of the displaced people in welfare centres in and around Vavuniya.

He said that of nearly 300,000 persons, only 135,927 still live in camps as others had been resettled. The number of people living in camps belong to 44,940 families and are housed in 14 welfare centres.

A staff of 938 persons had been deployed to maintain and upgrade the facilities of these camps.

In addition to the provisions made by the government, the UNHCR, the World Food Programme and the UNICEF are providing assistance to serve these people, the Minister said.
