Anuradhapura High Court Judge Ms Menaka Wijesundera sentenced an ex-Police Constable to life imprisonment for attempted murder of a woman and robbery of jewellery belonging to her.

The accused, in addition to life imprisonment for the murder attempt, was also sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment for the robbery of jewellery and fined Rs 20,000.

The accused G. Nissanka Dissanayake from Nelumkulam, Vavuniya had been indicted of attempting to murder K. M. Kusuma Kumari on the bund of Mahakandarawa tank in Mihintale on or around August 28, 1998 while serving as a Police Constable in Vavuniya. He had used his T-56 service weapon to shoot at the victim.
