Wrong tickets put rail commuters in trouble
Several railway passengers were inconvenienced at the Vavuniya Railway Station during the last few days due to their failure to produce the correct tickets when they disembarked.
They complained to the Station Master at Vavuniya that when boarding the Yal Devi at Colombo Fort they paid the correct fare and asked for tickets to Vavuniya but the station authorities found that 47 commuters were in possession tickets only to travel up to Kurunegala, Galgamuwa and Maho stations
The commuters said that in their hurry to board the intercity express to Vavuniya they did not bother to check the tickets but were detected by ticket inspectors in the moving train and at the exit gate at Vavuniya Station.
An official at the Vavuniya Station said that such instances had been on the rise in the recent past. If such a ticket had been issued mistakenly after accepting the correct fare it could happen only once in a way and not to this extent, he said.
