Barath: Let me prove my mettle
Hopeful of an eventual Test debut, Adrian Barath is eager to impress in the West Indies’ three-day warm-up match against Queensland, which commenced on Wednesday.
In the first innings though, Barath was dismissed without scoring.
Barath proved instrumental in Trinidad & Tobago’s fruitful Champions League campaign last month and hopes a few more hefty contributions with the bat will see him line up alongside fellow opener Chris Gayle comes the first Test in Brisbane on 26 November.
"I’m confident, I have worked hard and I’m prepared," enthused the right-hander. "I performed well in the Champions League in India for Trinidad and Tobago and I’m looking to continue.
"All I want is the opportunity to get out there and show what I am made of.
Twenty two-year-old Barath sports a healthy first-class average of 46.05 across 22 matches, including five centuries. But he is aware the Queensland attack will be out to rattle his composure with fast, short bowling.
"I am a player who can adapt to foreign conditions. I will play it as I see it," he concluded.
The Windies are on the brink of recovering from a contract row that left many senior stars on strike. However, momentary resolution has seen a full-strenth squad tour Australia.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago captain Daren Ganga has rallied Caribbean officials to back his team’s bid to become a professional, competitive unit on the global cricket platform.
"I know that there is a new board [in Trinidad and Tobago] and they are still settling down, but I would like to make a call for them to assist local clubs and help them become more professional," he said.
"When clubs operate in an amateurish manner, the players cannot advance quickly.
"Barath played for this club at the age of 14. Maybe, he would have been able to do it earlier if the circumstances were different."
