Tri-nation Under-19 tournament
Standbys called up for practice games
The Junior National Selection Committee has called on two standbys for injured pacemen Lahiru Jayaratne and Kasun Madusanka for practice matches tobe played prior to the forthcoming Tri-nation Under-19 tournament involving Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Sunil Wickramanayake, chairman, Junior National Selection Committee said that Dasun Chanaka and Irosh Samarasooriya will get opportunities to play in the practice matches of the Tri-nation tournament.
St. Peter’s College paceman Lahiru Jayaratne and St. Servatius’ College speedster Kasun Madusanka have been ruled out through injury, Wickramanayake said.
Although the two standbys have been called up to play the practice matches, their chances of gaining a place in the 30 member pool are highly unlikely.
"There is no addition to the existing pool. We are giving the two standbys an opportunity to play in the practice matches," Wickramanayake said.
The two leading pacemen in the team, Chathura Peiris and Charith Jayampathi have been rested for the practice matches, Wickramanayake said.
"We don’t want to expose them (Chathura Peiris and Charith Jayampathi) in the practice matches. They will play in the tournament proper," Wickramanayake explained.
It will be a big opportunity for the two pacies from Maris Stella College and Richmond College and quite a challenge when they bowl against Pakistan and Bangladesh. While Dasun Chanaka had moderate success bowling for Maris Stella in the school seasons, Samarasooriya’s bowling abilities helped him change schools on four occasion within two years (Debarawewa, Mahanama, back to Debarawewa and Richmond), before finally settling down to play for Richmond in the last ‘Big Match’.
