Can Air Force down high riding, unbeaten Renown?

Everything is set for the much awaited final of the Dialog Champions League soccer tournament between SL Air Force and Renown SC which will be worked off at City Football Complex, Slave Island, tomorrow, commencing 3.30 pm.

There is not much of a difference between the two teams, which makes it anybody’s game.

The semi finals drew thousands of fans who enjoyed every minute of play.

Renown SC has won a number of trophies in the years gone by, among them the Bristol League and FA Cup but they have not been able to win anything significant in the recent past. But this year, with many former National schools and National youth soccer stars, mainly from Zahira College, they have proved to be a formidable force to reach the final in style and win back their fan base. M. Fazal is their leading goal scorer with 14 whose speed and accuracy has been a major factor in Renown SC making it to the final. Fellow Zahirians M. Nafeer, Kaiz Safras and M. Nazrullah have also been outstanding. The threesome have found the net 37 times in 11 matches. Goal keeper Sathis Kumar is a very dependable custodian who is in the National pool as well.

On the other hand, Air Force, playing in their first ever Dialog Premier League final are a very strong and experienced team. They too have the services of three National players, among them forward Shanmugaraj Sanjeev, who has scored eight goals in the tournament.

Air Force have conceded just eight goals, which is the lowest, mainly due to superb goal keeping by Sanathana Pathum.

Both captains, Chanaka Pradeep Fernando of Air Force and Sathis Kumar of Renown said that both teams are quite capable of providing entertaining soccer and that they will play attacking football.

Former National player and AFC C License Coach and Sri Lanka Under-23 coach M. Amanulla is the coach of Renown SC, while former National player, AFC A License and Sri Lanka women’s soccer coach Chaminda Steinwell is the coach of Sri Lanka Air Force.

M. Fazal of Renown SC is likely to carry away the Golden Boot award for the highest goal scorer. He has scored 14 goals.

R. K. Leonard of Renown received a Red card in the semi final and K. C. K. Lankeshwara of Air Force was slapped with two yellow cards, which will keep them out of the final.

The winner will carry home Rs.700,000 and the prestigious Dialog Champion’s Trophy while the runner-up will receive Rs.500,000.

The chief guest at the final will be Sports and Public Recreation Minister, Gamini Lokuge.
