Malaysia Open W’chair Tennis
Raja, Gamini thru’ to Round-2

Sri Lanka’s Upali Rajakaruna and D. M. Gamini won their first round matches with ease, while the third member of the Lankan team, A. B. Alagoda who featured in the Men’s Singles Second Draw, lost his first round encounter on the opening day, Fri. (20), at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) organised Malaysia Open Wheelchair Tennis tournament, now being held at the Jalan Duta tennis courts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Sri Lanka Tennis Association provided the results of the Malaysia Open on Friday, quoting the Sri Lanka team manager in Kuala Lumpur, Vipul Perera.

Both Rajakaruna and Gamini, who feature in Men’s Singles Main Draw in Malaysia now, were members of the Sri Lanka team that was placed 5th out of 16 participating nations in the Invacare World Team Cup (Group 2), the World Cup of Wheelchair Tennis, held in Nottingham, England, last July.

The Malaysia Open, an ITF Futures Series knockout tournament, is an Asia-Oceania Zone USD 5,000 prize money event. Tomorrow is the final day of the competition. The three-member Sri Lanka team is to take part in the subsequent Thailand Open which is to be held from Nov. 25 to 27.

Men’s Singles Main Draw (Round 1)

D. M. Gamini beat Saah Borhan of Malaysia 6-4, 6-2

U. Rajakaruna beat Hadi Mahadi of Iraq 6-2, 6-0

Men’s Singles 2nd Draw (Round 1)

A. B. Alagoda lost to Kee King Hong of Malaysia 1-6, 0-6.
