It
is an yearly event that many look forward to when Kamini Witharane and
her daughter present the work of their pupils expertise at table decor.
Working on different themes turning up with innovative ideas to make a
memorable impression which is not easy to forget. Having been a judge
for several years running, each time I come back with the thought that
this time was the best. Titled "Lets Party" there was a sense of
elegance in most of the arrangements, which made it a task for me and
another Judge Architect Channa Daswatte to arrive on a final winner.
Nevertheless the winner based her efforts on the Binara Mala which
consisted of ecru table linen exquisitely embroidered in ivory and gold
with crockery in white rimmed in gold, with a mini brass lamp and
lotuses as the centre piece to make the winner.
In second place was an arrangement for a silver wedding anniversary celebration which was in perfect good taste and visually a beautiful sight to behold.
The other finalists were all based on floral themes with in third place. "Natures Glory", with "Victorian Roses" in fourth and "Roses from Roses" in the fifth spot. It is exciting to think that so much thought and effort had gone into works of art which Chief Guest Arjuna Ranatunga must certainly have admired. He was greeted by Kamini in a printed saree in red, yellow and off white with a streak of turquoise in the pallu. Among the others gathered for the occassion were Roshan Ranawana and Dayan Witharane to add glamour to the event, with Roshan mobbed by the many taking part on a non stop photo call.
