UNF’s aim to end "Rajapaksa family rule" and restore democracy - Ranil

The primary objective of forming the United National Front (UNF) is to end the "Rajapaksa family rule" and restore democracy through the election of a people-friendly government, Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

"We have jointly prepared a program of action to guide this nation towards prosperity", Wickremesinghe told the party’s Executive Committee meeting at the Opposition Leader’s Cambridge Terrace office last week.

He said that more political parties and civil society organizations will join the UNF, which has a clear cut policy to work collectively towards restoring democracy and human freedom in the country.

Sri Lanka should have a firm national policy which should remain unchanged whatever government is elected to power. For the past 60 years, governments voted to power changed the policies adopted by the previous regime. This proved disastrous.

This was detrimental to the nation as a whole and Sri Lanka lagged behind while other countries with steadfast national policies achieved progress and prosperity, Wickremesinghe noted.

He said the UNF has agreed on a ten-point program to restore democracy and usher in economic prosperity. With the war over, the country needs to be steered on a firm course of economic development for the greater good of the people.
