The Chairman of the Junior National Selection Committee told ‘the Sunday Island’ that all players in the Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup pool will get an opportunity to play in the Tri Nation Tournament commencing at the end of this month.
The pre World Cup preparation tournament involving Bangladesh, Pakistan and host Sri Lanka will be played from November 29 to December 8 and it will be the last preparation tourney on home soil before the ICC Youth event to be held in January.
Out of the 30 pool members, 16 players got valuable exposure in their victorious tour Down Under last month while over a dozen other in the pool are yet to get competitive tournament exposure.
Sunil Wickramanayaka, the chairman of selectors, said that opportunities will be given to players who did not tour Australia.
"We will rest eight players, who toured Australia, for the practice matches. Except for those eight players, all others will play the two practice matches," Wickramanayaka said in an interview with ‘Sunday Island.’
He said that the players will be selected for matches in phases and the committee has forwarded the names of such players for the first two matches for Sports Minister’s approval.
The players for the other two matches of the first round will be selected later.
Wickramanayaka said that although there is little space for a new player to get into the 30-member pool, the selectors will not overlook any outstanding performers in the practice matches which means that the two standby players could have some hopes.
Pacemen Lahiru Jayaratne and Kasun Madusanka have been ruled out through injuries and two standbys have been called to play the practice matches.
Speedsters Dasun Chanaka of Maris Stella and Irosh Samarasooriya of Richmond College are the stand by players who have been picked to play the practice matches.
Leading pacemen Chathura Peiris and Charith Jayampathi will not be playing in the practice matches.
The tri nation tournament will see the teams play two matches against each other before the best two reach the final to be played on December 8.
Sri Lanka Under-19 will be engaging in another preparation tournament in South Africa in December before flying for New Zealand in January for the ICC Youth World Cup.
The Youth World Cup will be played from January 15-30 in Christchurch with the participation of 16 teams.
