

K. K. Senavirathana of Sri Lanka Navy established a new meet record to become the best male athlete as two new meet records were established in the second and final day of the Defence Services Games this year held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, yesterday.
R. M. C. S. Rasnayake of Sri Lanka Air Force, who won the 400-metre event, finished as the best female athlete of this year’s event.
The first meet record came when Senavirathana clocked 46.98 seconds in the 400-metre race to improve on the previous record of 47.12 seconds which had been set by W. R. K. Wimalawansa of SL Army in 2001.
Chamali Priyadarshani of Sri Lanka Navy, who established a new Sri Lankan record in the Triple Jump on Friday, was expected to improve on her own Long Jump meet record and she made it when she cleared a distance of 6.11-metres to improve on her own previous record of 5.76-metres which had been set four years ago.
The Defence Services Athletic Meet, which got underway last Thursday (19) with an attractive opening ceremony, featured over 1,500 athletes representing the three forces.
The championships will conclude with a closing ceremony that will be held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium next Monday (23) with an exhibition basketball match, which is to feature players from all three forces.
