Former
Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka yesterday said that he was ready
to negotiate with Opposition political parties regarding any
conditions for nominating him as the common presidential candidate.
Fonseka yesterday told The Island that there was nothing
wrong in discussing conditions though some may find fault with such
a strategy. Fonseka said that in keeping with his policy, he could
discuss with Western People’s Front leader Mano Ganeshan, MP his
conditions to facilitate an agreement.

Army waging a different war
The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol has involved the Sri
Lanka Army in a campaign to discourage smoking. A group of soldiers
is pictured marching in Polonnaruwa in support of the campaign. This
was followed by a ceremony held at the office of the Regional
Director of Health Services, Polonnaruwa, to felicitate traders who
had stopped selling cigarettes. The main attraction of the march was
a poster with a bent cigarette illustrating a slogan that smoking
caused impotence.
