Kill stray dogs and prevent rabies
I read the Valuable Contribution of Dr. Panduka Gunawardhane in the "Leisure Land" section of the Island of 3/11/09 which gives a detailed description of the disease and how the plans to eliminate this disease have miserably failed. It is stated that the Government has spent Rs. 500 million for dog bites alone. In 2007 the government met expenditure for 317,945 doses of human rabies vaccine and 1,037,617 doses of animal rabies vaccine. It further says that the treasury has allocated Rs. 200 million this year for rabies control.

The stray dog menace is prevalent in almost all cities in Sri Lanka specially in Kandy, Colombo and Galle. Although there seems to be a Sterilization Programme, little has come out of it. In Kandy there are thousands of stray dogs running around the city. In other cities it is worse.

The Government has a duty to eliminate all forces threatening human lives and accordingly they should take steps to eliminate stray dogs.

What is the use of having stray dogs all over the country although animal societies like KAPAW or sathva mithra talk so much about it? If killing terrorists is a social service, killing stray dogs will also be a service to society as it has become a real threat to everybody including school going children.

It is high time we resorted to the previous system of eliminating stray dogs.
