Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama said that the SLPA did not lose financially in any way. During the recent work to rule and added that port workers performed with added commitment resulting in the situation being under total control.
The president of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (UNP Affiliated Union), Udeni claimed that the SLPA suffered a loss of rupees two billion excluding the repair of equipment which occurred due to being operated on a low gear (first gear) due to the slowing of speed of operations.
Udeni added that Gnanathilake, the transfer crane operator who was assaulted during the work to rule has been discharged from hospital and is now convalesing at home.
It is unfortuante that the cordial relations between workers at the port have gone sour and the situation is not normal as yet.
Udeni added that a member of the UNP Union was assaulted by two of his fellow workers from the SLFP Union yesterday. This situation arose due to illwill generated by the political divisions of members who were and against for the work to rule.
This particular worker was admitted to the accident service and after observation for 24 hours was transferred to ward 18 for further treatment.
However Dr. Wickrama said that no such incident occupied at the Port Authority.
It appears, if the account of the recent incident is true, that residual tension caused by the work to rule has not subsided fully.
