School closure in Central Province

A decision has been taken at an important meeting after analysing the situation in the central province with regard to the epidemic of Swine flu which has threatened the local community.

This came after a few deaths were reported, including that of a boy from Trinity College, Kandy.

Most citizens and parents of Kandy would appreciate the decision to bring forward the December holidays.

As far as medical matters are concerned, the Provincial Director of Health Services, Dr Shanthi Samarasinghe and her team consisting of three Deputy Directors are quite capable of assessing the situation and giving their recommendations to the political team consisting of Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayaka for appropriate action.

We believe, as citizens and parents that the correct decision has been made by the Governor and the Chief Minister.

Dr. Ananda Jayasinghe,
Head, Department of Community Medicine,
Faculty of Medicine,
University of Peradeniya.
