Symbol acceptable to joint
opposition for Presidential Election – Kiriella
General Sarath Fonseka will be the ‘Common Candidate’

A symbol acceptable to all political parties supporting the Opposition’s ‘Common Candidate’ will be used at the next Presidential Election, expected to be held in January next year.

Lakshman Kiriella MP told ‘The Island,’ last night that there was no dispute about the ‘symbol’, though some interested parties were trying to make an issue of it.

He said that despite various theories being floated in certain quarters, it has been agreed that General Sarath Fonseka will be the Opposition’s ‘Common Candidate,’ at the next Presidential Poll.

"The outcome of the UNP leadership deliberations with other political parties, to present a ‘Common Candidate’ will be submitted for approval of the UNP Working Committee, which is scheduled to meet on Friday, he said. "A public announcement will be made thereafter."

Asked about JVP claims of Fonseka contesting on its ticket, Kiriella said "That is not correct. The main thing is that we are all agreed on a ‘Common Candidate.’ Other matters can be sorted out through negotiations."
