CHENNAI: A Sri Lankan woman on Monday requested the suburban police to help get back her daughter’s eight-sovereign gold jewellery after two Lankan women who were hired to apply make-up, escaped with the jewellery at Maduravoyal.

Indrani (52) had been living in Chennai since 2006. On November 9, during her younger daughter Dharmini’s wedding, she had hired Sugitha, a Sri Lankan woman, to apply make-up for her elder daughter Chendini. According to Indrani, Sugitha had come along with another Lankan woman, Priyadarshini.

While the duo was at work, Sugitha asked Chendini to keep her eyelids closed for the eye make-up. After a few minutes, Sugitha told her that the jewellery she was wearing was a hindrance for applying make-up and suggested that she remove it.

After Chendini agreed, Sugitha and Priyadarshini removed the jewellery that included two 1.5 sovereign gold chains and a 4.5 sovereign gold neckpiece.

When Chendini opened her eyes and asked for the jewellery, the two women suggested that she wear imitation jewellery, claiming they would look better than the original ones. Chendini refused. Immediately, the duo fled with the gold jewellery. Chendini sounded an alarm but they managed to escape.

Indrani and her daughters tried to trace the duo by questioning their relatives, but couldn’t make any progress. Meanwhile, Indrani received a phone call from a man, who claimed that he was a sub-inspector at the Valsaravakkam police station and was a relative of the two make-up women.

He allegedly threatened Indrani not to make a complaint at the Maduravoyal police station but to come to the Valsaravakkam police station instead.

"We went to the Maduravoyal station, but the police have not taken any action till now and that SI is still threatening me," said Indrani. She also claimed that the duo was involved in similar thefts in other places. (Indian Express)
