Child killer’s appeal against death sentence rejected

Ambalangoda – Balapitiya High Court Judge Amal Thilakaratne dismissed the appeal against the death sentence handed down in 1993, by the same Court, to a killer of a six-year-old child.

Thomme Hakuru Wimaladasa alias ‘Sakara’, the appellant, was indicted with the murder of Thomme Hakuru Thilakaratne (6), alias ‘Chuti’ at Dickkala, Yatagala, by cutting his neck with a katty on April 18 1985, over a family dispute. He was found guilty by the Balapitiya High Court in 1993 and sentenced to death. The then Judicial Medical Officer had recorded that there were two serious cut injuries on the child’s neck.

The Balapitiya High Court Judge, hearing the appeal, confirmed the death sentence saying that the prosecution had proved beyond doubt that the convict had carried out the murder of the child. As such the former verdict could not be over ruled.

State Counsel, Aparna Suwadurugoda prosecuted. Attorney-at-Law, Sasanka Jayasekera appeared for the appellant.
