

AIDS Awareness campaign to be launched in NWP schools
The World AIDS Day falls on December 1. To mark the event, the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition in collaboration with the NWP Ministry of Education has organised 413 awareness seminars on AIDS for senior children in schools in the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts during the first week of December 2009.
Seventy five PHIs and 125 family health nurses will be deployed for this purpose by the North Western Province Health Ministry.
About 15,000 school children will be educated on the preventive measures and precautions to be taken to avoid contacting this dangerous disease.
R. M. Ekanayake, a senior PHI in the Bingiriya electorate told The Island that 1.5 million rupees had been allocated for educating the school community on AIDS this year and PTIs of schools would be trained to give instructions to students on epidemics and AIDS next year.
