Swedish Golf Classic on Saturday

Victoria Golf and Country Resort is all set to host the annual Swedish Golf Classics which will be worked off at the Victoria golf course at Rajawella, Digana, on Saturday, commencing 7.00 am.

When entries closed on Tuesday afternoon a record 130 golfers had submitted their entries with more than half of them being from abroad.

Entries have been received from golfers from Sweden, Italy, England, Germany, Dubai, India, Singapore and Malaysia, said Sujeeva Lanakatillake, one of the prime organizers of the event.

The Victoria region received substantial rain during the last few days, which has helped the course with a rich growth of grass and playing here is going to be tough and challenging. The fairways have been neatly trimmed and are in fine fettle for the big occasion.

The two top trophies which will be on offer are the Swedish Golf Classics trophy for the best Stableford Nett score. India-born Kushil Kumar is the defending champion. The other major trophy on offer is the Rolf’s Cup bestowed in honour of five times world motocross champion, Rolf Tibblin, a legendary rider from Sweden who stunned the world with his daredevil riding in the 70s, when motocross was new to the world.

Rolf Tibblin himself will present this trophy which was won last year by Englishman and Cheshire country cricketer and ruggerite Ian Tait, who has made giant strides at Victoria.

In addition to this, there will be at least 10 more attractive prizes to be won by male and female golfers at this grand championship, which is one of the biggest golf championships to be held at Victoria, and the first major tournament to be held at the Victoria golf course after it won the ‘Best Golf Course in the Sub-Continent’ award in Malaysia earlier this month.
