Fonseka will have to make way for Ranil as joint opposition candidate - Weerawansa

National Democratic Front leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday said that though the Opposition has claimed that Gen. Sarath Fonseka will be its joint Opposition candidate, at the opportune moment he will be asked to make way for UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Addressing a news conference at Battaramulla, Weerawansa branded the common front as an opportunistic unpatriotic bunch of politicians and said that a war hero in the calibre of Gen. Sarath Fonseka, who was one of the key players in defeating terrorism and decimating the LTTE, has been made scapegoat for political gain.

"The man who defeated the Tigers has become the common candidate of those who helped the Tigers," he said.

They are not concerned about Fonseka and Fonseka is making it personal, turning it into a feud, he said.

The former JVP firebrand said the General who was hailed as a hero and a patriot, for his heroic feat of defeating the LTTE, by the masses, will now be looked upon as a traitor by the very same people since he has joined hands with the very people, who threw their weight behind international conspirators who tried various means to stop the security forces wiping out the LTTE and defeating terrorism.

"It was Ranil Wickremesinghe, Rauf Hakeem, Mano Ganeshan, Mangala Samaraweera, etc. who went behind imperialistic powers to stop the LTTE being annihilated in order to bring peace to the country and the irony is that today Gen Fonseka has placed his trust in these traitors, the very people who tried their best to undermine his efforts," Weerawansa said.

Justifying the UPFA’s decision to call for an early Presidential election, Weerawansa said "Our party thought that it is the best way to answer our critics by winning the Presidential election and proving that the masses still want Mahinda Rajapaksa as the President."
