Kalutara Water Supply Scheme Expansion Programme
Cabinet gives green light to commence phase II of the project

The Cabinet has approved the Kalutara Water Supply Scheme Expansion Programme (phase 11) which will augment the water supply to the Maggona, Aluthgama and Beruwala areas.

This massive scheme, when completed, will be able to provide safe drinking water to a number of villages and towns, the Construction and Engineering Services Ministry said. The scheme will cost Rs. 1,366 million.

Construction and Engineering Services Minister Rajitha Senaratne told The Island that people living in Beruwala, Aluthgama and Bentota were affected by the inadequate drinking water supply and the new scheme would be able to provide adequate drinking water to the people in this region.

He pointed out that he had been appointed as new organizer for Beruwala electorate and had already taken action to restructure the Beruwala and Aluthgama towns. He said he had a series of discussions with engineers and developers regarding new tourism zones and ways and means to improve the fishing industry in Beruwala. A plan was being formulated to develop rural villages in Beruwala electorate.

Minister Senaratne said that the proceedings in Beruwala Magistrate’s Court would commence soon and an auditorium which could accommodate 1,500 people would be constructed. The Aluthgama bus stand would also be refurbished he said.
