That war of words

The unfolding scene right round us in relation to certain allegations, and pointedly retaliatory comments made from time to time by certain political big shots, is sickening. Politicians are all seen to be hurling abuse at one another in a grossly indecent manner.

What is urgently required for social tranquillity and peace, is the observance of decency and moderation in our speech and corresponding actions.

"Eschew extremism and embrace moderation" should be our guiding philosophy in keeping with the middle path preached by the Buddha and other religious teachers.

Unlimited praise and slavish worship should not be proffered or extended to anyone, nor should extreme vilification or condemnation be levelled against anybody in a fit of rancour and enmity.

Gift of the gab, they say, is a precious asset if it is used for the fostering of good relations. What is happening is quite the opposite.

R. M. A. B. Dassanayake,
Matale.
