Successful conclusion of 11th SATRC meeting

The 11th South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council (SATRC) successfully concluded its three day meeting yesterday (26). The participating eight South Asian countries reached amicable and fruitful agreements on the numerous issues discussed over the three days. The chairmanship of the council was simultaneously announced and handed over to Director General of the Telecommunications Regulators’ Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL).

"Several important decisions pertaining to the industry was taken during this council meeting and the Action Plan Phase 3 was declared," said the new SATRC Chairman Priyantha Kariyapperuma. In order to delegate and operate more efficiently the various countries and fields have been divided into three working groups; Policy and Regulation led by India, Spectrum chaired by Iran and thirdly Network and Services headed by Sri Lanka.

One of the important topics which was key to the meeting was the implementation of uniform rates for calls made within the region. The proposal was unanimously agreed and the matter will now be put to the operators. Other equally pressing issues such as cyber security, which everyone present agreed was a vital topic, and the assurance of quality mobile handsets to South Asian consumers were also discussed and will be further dealt with.

The harmony and cordiality of the SATRC over the last eleven years is having beneficial and far reaching consequences for consumers in the telecommunications sector across South Asia. Sri Lanka holding both the chairmanship of the SATRC and heading the Network and Services group have a lot of responsibility but the countries already booming and ever expanding telecommunications sector ensures the countries imminent success in both roles.
