Presidential probe into disappearances and abductions
Vast majority of those reported missing found

A Presidential Commission which investigated violence during the war against the LTTE said that of the 21,936 reported disappearances of persons between 13-09-2006 to 01-10-2009 period, 20,106 had been found.

According to the Presidential Commission, 1,830 persons had not been found so far though inquiries were continuing. The missing comprises: Western Province (418), East (614), Vanni (323), Jaffna peninsula (148), NCP (73), Uva (56), Sabaragamuwa (26), Wayamba (31), CP (54) and Southern Province (87). J. H. S. S. Jayasundera, Secretary to the Commission, said that of the investigated disappearances, 2,382 had been reported from the North, East and the Vanni.

A giant cutout of President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been erected near the Thummulla Junction by his party supporters as soon as the date for the next presidential election was announced yesterday.
