

Renown SC win inaugural Dialog Champions Trophy
Renown SC outplayed Air Force SC in a penalty tie breaker 3-1 in the final of the Dialog Champions League Soccer tournament at CR & FC grounds, yesterday.
Jupiters, Ratnam, Renown, Saunders, Air Force, Blue Star, Don Bosco, Negombo Youth, New Youngs, Army, Police and Old Bens were the 12 teams which participated in the tournament.
Renown, the only unbeaten team in the tournament, were heavily tested by the Airmen before the penalty shoot-out.
At half time the scores were nil all.
A number of scoring opportunities were missed by both teams though Renown enjoyed the better part of possession.
But in the 61st minute of play Air Force opened scoring through a Sampath Perera header.
Eight minutes later Sampath Perera found the net again for the airmen, from 20 yards out.
But the excited Air Force fans were jolted when Mohamed Nafeer scored the first goal for Renown SC in the 75th minute. Renown had more to cheer for when Mohamed found the net again, just two minutes before the final whistle.
At full time the scores were 2-2, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out.
The Fairplay award was won by Jupiters SC while the Golden Boot award – which was awarded to the highest goal scorer of the tourney - was won by Mohamed Fazal of Renown who scored 14 goals.
The Most Valuable Player of the Tournament was Renown goalkeeper, Mohamed Hajmal.
Suren Gunawardena, Chief Operating Officer, Dialog Telecom was the chief guest, while Chirantha De Zoysa, Senior Manager, Group Marketing Promotions and Sports Marketing, Dialog Telecom, was the guest of honour.
The champions received the prestigious Dialog Champions League Trophy and Rs. 700,000 while the runner-up walked away with Rs. 500,000.
