London musical show in aid of Lankan war heroes

A musical show, 'Gee Anandani' in aid of Sri Lankan war heroes was held in London last Sunday. There was a substantial turnout of Sri Lankans at the event, organized by Old Anandians in the UK, to support this worthy cause. Funds raised will be donated to the 'Rana Viru Arana' building fund at Attidiya.

Renowned Sri Lankan vocalists Nanda Malani, Victor Ratnayake, Sunil Edirisinghe and Deepika Priyadarshani participated in this musical show for which music was provided by director Rohana Weerasinghe assisted by Wijeratne Ranatunge, D. D. Gunasena, Mahinda Bandara, Vajira Gomes and Janaka Bogoda.

Over one thousand people flocked to the Logan Hall in Central London to view the show. "We had a full house", the organizers said. "Hundreds of fans had to be turned away as the hall was packed".

The audience was entertained with some of the best hits such as 'Udagu Liyan', 'Thun Hele Kela Thula', by Nanda Malini and Victor Ratnayake's 'Hitha Mithuru', 'Bindumathi', Sunil Edirisinghe's 'Sandakadapahanaka', 'Ranmalak' and Deepkia Priyadarshani's 'Kaviya Oba' and 'Gata Gata’.

There was a roaring applause to the tabla beat by Wijeratne Ranatunge for Sunil Edirirsinghe's song 'Gambira Thedathi'.

Rohana Weerasinghe also sang his popular rendition 'Muthu Kuda Ihalana' at the request of the organizers. He thanked SriLankan Airlines for providing them with the tickets to fly to London for this show. He also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Shantha Godagama and Mrs. Ranji Godagama for making them comfortable during their stay.

Nanda Malani said she was elated to see such a large number of young Sri Lankans amongst the audience. "I have been a vocalist for five decades and this is a great honour to all of us".

Victor Ratnayake said the Old Anandians in UK should be commended for organizing this event to help war heroes who liberated Sri Lanka from the clutches of terrorism.

Sunil Edirisinghe noted that it is very difficult to find people who show gratitude towards anybody nowadays and the Old Anandians had done a great job.

Deepika Priyadarshanee observed she was fortunate to sing on the same stage with Nanda Malani, her mentor, Victor Ratnayake and Sunil Edirisinghe. "It was a privilege to sing before a well disciplined, appreciative audience".

Rohana Weerasinghe said that while most Sri Lankan radio and television channels promote songs which lack depth, it was heart warming to see an educated audience enjoying the high calibre renditions of veteran singers.
