A Sri Lankan woman walks past posters of President Mahinda Rajapaksa pasted on a wall as a vendor looks on in Colombo. The President called for early elections, hoping to take advantage of his popularity after ending the country’s 25-year civil war to win a new six-year term promising to deliver economic prosperity with the same commitment as he rid the country of terrorism. The Central Bank and the Institute of Policy Studies say the government would have to rationalise expenditure and cut wasteful spending in order to relieve fiscal pressures so that public investments can be efficient and fruitful.
