With such high numbers of motor vehicles the cost of accidents estimated stands at Rs. 20 billion and cost of congestion estimated at Rs. 25 billion.
For economic growth and development it is necessary for the country to manage waste and reduce the high cost significantly.
The demand for transport economists is vital as Sri Lanka has very few numbers of professionally qualified.
Though the requirement of graduates is 5000 in the transport economic field universities and other professional organizations only produce 1000 graduates which is an unsatisfying number for the field.
With the new technology opening new opportunities for growth and development it is time to apply disciplines of studies for the lagging requirement of transport economist in the transport sector which is the gate way of economic growth and development.
