Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, MP yesterday claimed that a dispute between the Rajapaksas and former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka would have been much more serious than the war veteran’s differences with the UNP and other leading Opposition figures. He said that obviously the retired General had not been discouraged by some statements attributed to Opposition MP, including UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe during the military offensive.
He was responding to The Island query whether the UNP and its partners would apologise for damaging statements attributed to Opposition MPs during the campaign. He said that a section of the media, particularly the State organs misinterpreted political speeches, including the one in which Wickremesinghe commented on the liberation of Thoppigala. He also explained the circumstances in which another UNP spokesman Lakshman Kirieilla, MP declared that any fool could wage war and SLFP MP Mangala Samaraweera, MP declared that Fonseka was not even fit to be the Commander of the Salvation Army.
