Nishika, Sumangala; first to represent
SL in FISM World Magic Convention

Nishika Pieris and Sumangala Silva represented Sri Lanka at this year’s FISM World Magic Convention held in Beijing, China. FISM World Magic Convention is regarded the most prestigious global event in the field of magic.

FISM or the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques’ (the International Federation of Magic Societies) is the main global organisation of magicians. Founded in 1948, it conducts the triennial magic convention coinciding with the World Championship of Magic. This year, the event was held for the 23rd occasion. No Sri Lankan magician has ever participated at a FISM Convention earlier.

Silva is a three-time National Magic Champion of Sri Lanka and two-time winner of the Master Magician of Sri Lanka title. He has won the Best Sleight of Hands award presented at the Sri Lanka Magic Nationals on seven occasions. He is also one of the current Vice Presidents of the Sri Lanka Magic Circle. Working as a professional magician for over 20 years, he has performed magic in the Maldives, Malaysia and Singapore. For the last two years, he has been working as a magician in Doha, Qatar.

Pieris is a former student of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo. She is a student at the Colombo International School. She has won the Young Magician of the Year award before emerging champion of the All-island Under-18 Magic Competition, organised by the Independent Television Network.

The next FISM World Magic Convention is scheduled to be held in 2012, in Blackpool, England. (RSS)
