‘Punter’ watch out, Roach out to get you!

He stands just five feet and eight inches. Not the ideal height for an ‘Express’ quick, say expert cricket commentators and writers.

He is Kemar Roach (21), the West Indies paceman who has come in for high praise from his skipper, Chris Gayle and Australian captain Ricky Ponting as well.

According to Gayle, "Roach maintained his 150 kph pace in the absorbing Adelaide Test, even late in spells when he should have been getting tired."

"I am no expert on pace, but I think he can go a lot quicker," Gayle wrote in his column in an Australian newspaper.

If he bowled that quick at the Adelaide Oval, how will he fare at the bouncy WACA, where the third Test between the West Indies and Australia is to be played?

These are Ponting’s own words: "Someone who is pretty short at that pace can get the ball to skid into you pretty quickly off the wicket with not much bounce. He’s a handful, there’s no doubt about that. He’s someone who could play a fair bit of Test cricket for them in the future."

The doyen of West Indies cricket writers and TV commentators, Tony Cozier, in an article in the Trinidad&Tobago Express says this: "In spite of his limited experience, Roach has had to spearhead the attack in the absence of Fidel Edwards (122 wickets in 43 Tests) and Jerome Taylor (83 wickets in 29 Tests)."

According to Cozier, "all three, put together and fit, would comprise as fast and fearsome a combination as there is in international cricket, at present."

For the time being though, the West Indies will have to rely on Kemar Roach, for their fire.
