

Police urge cooperation of motorists on nominations day
DIG Traffic, Lucky Peiris yesterday urged motorists to cooperate with police and avoid using the main roads around the Elections Secretariat in Rajagiriya tomorrow, between 9.00 a.m. and 11.00 a.m., where candidates for the forthcoming Presidential Election will hand over their nominations unless there is an urgency.
"Although the roads will be not closed to traffic, motorists are requested to cooperate with police," he said.
Today the police will conduct a rehearsal on the same route during the same time and the same procedure will be adopted between 9.00 a.m. - 11.00 tomorrow, he said.
Heavy vehicles such as containers and lorries, will not be allowed on these routes during this period, though buses meant for public transport will be allowed, he said.
The candidates travelling from Borella will use Cotta road, Old Cotta road and reach the Elections Secretariat at Sarana Mawatha. Only two representatives of each candidate and 10 nominees will be allowed to enter the Secretariat with certified passes, the DIG said.
Those travelling to Colombo via Rajagiriya from other directions, are also requested to use alternate routes.
