Millions needed for cricket stadium restoration
I was waiting patiently for someone, cricket-loving fans or even sportsmen – cricketers, to voice their disgust or displeasure at the damage caused to the Kettharama Sports Stadium where international cricket matches are played.
Strangely, none seem to care, not even the captain who won the World Cup.
Arjuna Ranatunga or Sanath Jayasuriya, who appear in TV advertisements, calling youth to usher in an era of prosperity to this country.
It was shown over the TV that the Kettaharama Stadium, where an Army display took place, was badly damaged and the turf had been cut and removed in lorries.
Mr Polonowita, the curator, had told the media that he was unaware of this and that he would make inquiries. That was the last we heard of the matter.
Surely the Sports Minister, if he really loves sports specially cricket, should have objected and recommended another venue, perhaps the old racecourse.
It will take millions of rupees to restore the grounds to the original standard and the question is who will pay for it?
