President to dissolve Parliament early Jan. 2010?
President Mahinda Rajapaksa is likely to announce the dissolution of Parliament after the motion to extend the State of Emergency is taken up in Parliament on January 5, 2010, party sources said yesterday.
The President has further cautioned all the UPFA Parliamentarians, SLFP district and electoral organizers and Party rank and file that their performance would be monitored during the campaigning for the 6th Presidential Elections on January 26, the sources said.
Those who failed to meet party expectations in obtaining a clear 2/3rd victory in their respective electorates and districts would stand to lose their party positions. They will not be given nominations at any forthcoming parliamentary or local elections scheduled to be held in 2010, the sources claimed.
When contacted UPFA General Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the Opposition contender would pose no challenge to the UPFA candidacy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. "We are very confident that we would be returned with a clear 2/3rd majority".
He said that the booklet with the continuation of Mahinda Chinthanaya policies beyond 2009 was being printed and would be released shortly
Premajayanth said that the UPFA Presidential Campaign would be managed by Senior Presidential Advisor and MP Basil Rajapaksa, whilst SLFP Treasurer and Minister Dulles Alahapperuma would chair the UPFA Propaganda Campaign Committee and would coordinate between the other Constituent Political Parties in the UPFA and look into all administrative matters in connection with the campaign .
He said that he had instructed all party organizers to comply with the decision of the Commissioner of Elections and to fill the specimen form given by the Department of Elections to open Party Political Offices for the campaign.
