Over 300,000 will lose jobs due to govt’s. poor HR record – Ranil
‘Foolish to file legal action over GSP+ suspension’

The undemocratic actions of the Mahinda Rajapaksa government will lead to over 300,000 Sri Lankans, dependent on the GSP+ facility, losing their jobs, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

Addressing UNP organizers at ‘Srikotha’, he said that the sine qua non for obtaining the GSP+ concession was good governance, respect for the rule of law and freedom of expression, but all of this has been brazenly violated during the last four years. "Without putting its house in order and complying with internationally accepted laws, the government was foolishly threatening legal action against the European Union for suspending the GSP+facility to Sri Lanka",Wickremesinghe said. "Common sense demands that it does not complicate matters further, but improves its human rights record and then appeals to the EU to lift the suspension."

He,said that democracy and the rule of law will be re-established once General Sarath Fonseka is elected President on January 26, followed by a UNF victory at the April 2010 General Election. "Once this is achieved, we will request the EU to restore the GSP+ concession. There is no doubt that they would comply."

A UNF administration will speedily implement its ten point policy programme, which includes the abolition of the executive presidency, creation of an executive Prime Minister’s post, implementation of the 17th amendment to the constitution, reduction of the number of cabinet ministers and prevention of crossovers in parliament, Wickremesinghe added.
