UPFA will have majority to amend Constitution - Susil

UPFA General Secretary and Education Minister Susil Premjayantha, said that after winning the Presidential election, the Alliance would get a two-third majority at the parliamentary polls which follow and that would enable the Government to amend the Constitution.

Addressing an election rally at Kolonnawa, he said that despite several discussions in the past on amending the Constitution, the only leader who could do so was President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He recalled the killings of JVP cadres in the 1988/89 period and asked how the parents and kith and kin of those dead cadres would feel when they see the UNP and the JVP on the same stage. "Those kith and kin of the dead youth from both parties have already resolved to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the forthcoming polls. In the terror period, in late eighties, the UNP burnt over 60,000 youth on tyre pyres while in the 1971 insurrection during the United Front Government, the misled youth were rehabilitated," Premjayantha said.

He also said that it is a pity to see the JVP supporting the UNP instead of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who abrogated the ceasefire agreement and defeated LTTE terrorism.
