The Oppositions Common Presidential Candidate Sarath Fonseka, was not looking for revenge, but is on a mission to re-establish democracy, good governance and eliminate unprecedented corruption, which has become the hallmark of the Mahinda Rajapaksa government, JVP MP Anura Kumara issanayake said yesterday.
He, told a news conference in Colombo, that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was a friend of his and the JVP helped him win the last Presidential Election, but the government’s scant disregard for democratic values and rule of law, criminal wastage of public funds and unprecedented "daylight robberies", led them to back Fonseka at the forthcoming Presidential Poll.
"General Fonseka, agreed to contest the Presidential Election following an appeal by the people, who are fed up with the corrupt Rajapaksa regime, the pathetic state of the economy and unbearable cost of living", Dissanayake said."There is hardly any real economic development, but the President, his family and band of 110 Ministers, are globe trotting and living in the lap of luxury."
A group of artistes, he said were speaking of protecting the motherland and campaigning for President Rajapaksa, but some of them also promote "Lux Soap", produced by a multi national company."How, can they call themselves patriots, while at the same time appearing in advertisements and urging the people to buy foreign toiletries?"
