Spinners: Gamini Goonesena overlooked
I read an article in The Island of December 17, by knowledgeable cricket writer Premasara Epasinghe titled "D S De Silva: Sri Lanka’s best leg-spinner".
His contention that DS is the best is debatable. No doubt DS had many feathers in his cap. As a leg-spinner of repute, he spent the green years of his cricketing career on foreign soil, except for a few instances when he represented his country, with much credit. I need not elaborate on his achievements. They were all highlighted in Epasinghe's article.
He goes on to say the top leg-spinners were C I Gunasekera. Dr Lareef Idroos, Malcolm Franks, and Elmo Rodrigopulle.
What’s baffling is that he had overlooked a Sri Lankan legend in leg-spin bowling Gamini Goonesena. I read about Gamini Goonesena in a book titled "The slow men" by David Frith. The author has highlighted Gamini's brilliance.
