SA trail England by 195 runs at tea

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) - England declared their first innings with a lead of 232 runs over South Africa on the fourth day of the second test at the Kingsmead Stadium on Tuesday, and then built on the advantage by taking two wickets before tea.

South Africa limped to the break on 37 for two wickets, still 195 runs behind.

Offspinner Graeme Swann did the damage for England, after coming on to bowl the 10th over of the Proteas second innings. He struck with his second ball, getting Ashwell Prince on 16 to edge on to his pads only for Ian Bell to grab a one-handed catch at silly point.

Swann then bowled No. 3 batsman Hashim Amla through the gate for six in his third over to take the players to tea. Prince and Amla each hit a four.

England had gone on the attack after lunch and hit 62 runs in nine overs to reach 575 for nine wickets before captain Andrew Strauss declared.

Three England wickets were lost in the space of 4.4 overs, including that of top-scorer Bell for 141. Bell was the ninth man out, caught behind off a bottom edge trying to cut a wide delivery from fast bowler Dale Steyn.

Bell hit 10 fours and a six in his 313-minute innings.

The other men out in the late-innings charge were Stuart Broad for 20 and Swann for 22. Broad batted for 65 minutes and hit a four and a six, while Swanns 14-ball innings included two fours and a six. All-rounder Broad edged one from J.P. Duminy to Jacques Kallis at slip and Swann popped a leading edge off Steyn to Prince at mid-on.

Duminy enjoyed career-best test figures of 3-89 and Steyn finished with 2-94. The Proteas best bowler, though, was Morne Morkel, with 3-78, although he did not take a wicket on Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday Bell became the second century-maker of the England first innings.

After England resumed the fourth day on 386-5, and by the end of the first session was on 513-6. Bell went into the break on 119 not out, having surpassed the 118 of opening batsman Alastair Cook.

Bell, like Cook, had been under pressure to play a big innings. He started the day on 55 not out overnight and clipped the first ball from Steyn to fine-leg for four. In the 25th over of the session he drove spinner Paul Harris to the long-on fence for four to bring up his ninth test hundred.

Bell and Matt Prior had taken their sixth-wicket partnership to 112, the second century stand of the innings. The collaboration was ended when Prior chopped a ball from spinner J.P. Duminy on to his stumps on 60. Prior hit six fours and a six in a 134-minute innings. He brought up his half-century by hitting Duminy for six over midwicket.

Duminy’s wicket was the only breakthrough of the morning session for South Africa.

England suffered an injury setback on Tuesday morning when Paul Collingwood suffered a dislocated finger during a warm-up.
