Drivers and riders beware tonight and early morning on New Year’s Day. Do not consume liquor and get behind steering wheels.

A spokesman for the police told ‘The Island’ that a programme has been drawn up though its ‘Nothing Special.’

They will be on the lookout for drunken drivers/riders specially the revelers on New Year’s eve and throughout New Year’s Day.

"Every year, during these two days, we conduct this type of operation. It’s nothing new. We will be very strict, particularly due to today being Poya Day. Breathaliser tests will be made on those suspected of being drunk or under the influence of liquor. We will prosecute those found guilty," said a senior policemen.

The City traffic police will be out in full strength, assisted by the emergency police cars. Speed merchants too should be careful.
