Army Chief rectifies anomalies and
provides relief to disabled personnel

Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya had, taking immediate steps on behalf of the war heroes who suffered injuries and became disabled or totally handicapped under different medical categories, adopted unprecedented measures to provide urgent relief to the Army Media unit said yesterday.

It said until recently the disabled War Heroes of regular and volunteer forces had been employed in different capacities on the recommendations of the Director of Medical Services and given promotions.

The present Commander of the Army has, in response to grievances submitted to him personally by affected sections, immediately taken following relief and welfare measures:

a. The disabled personnel under permanent medical category—Category (I), if they so desire to provide their services to the Army further in the future, those other ranks, could continue to do so in their own units and receive promotions and salaries accordingly.

b. Those War Heroes under Category (II), if they so desire to provide their services further to their own units, could do so while being in their units or outside and receive their salary increments and promotions accordingly.

c. War Heroes who became totally disabled under Category (III) and are unable to perform their duties, if they so desire, would serve the Army and receive salary increments and due promotions.

d. The totally disabled soldiers under category (IV) who have pledged to retire from the service and want to serve until 55 years of age (retirement) could receive salary increments and due promotions.

All regiments have been issued with instructions and orders in this regard, the army media unit said.
