India to construct railtrack between Omantai and Pallai

IRCON of India will construct a 90km railway track between Omantai and Pallai. The company expects to complete construction within two and half years. It will cost US $ 185 million, Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma told a media conference on the agreement signing ceremony between India and Sri Lanka at Transport Ministry auditorium yesterday.

Minister Alahapperuma said that India had come forward to help Sri Lanka on many occasions and the new rail track would be a great advantage for the people in the North. This would eliminate a number of transport problems faced by the people in the North.

He added that several railway track construction projects such as Vavuniya – Omantai, Pallai – Kankesanturai, Medawachchiya – Madhu and the Madhu – Kankesanturai had been planned and the feasibility studies for construction was being done. The Sri Lankan Government was extremely thankful to Indian Government for the offer.

Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha said that India was pleased to help Sri Lanka construct railway track construction because the Sri Lankan Government ended the 30-year long war.

The Government had also prioritized development war devastated North and the Indian Government was happy to undertake railway construction of the North.
