Mahinda confident of minority support

A confident President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he had overwhelming support of Tamil speaking politicians though the Opposition boast of minority support for its presidential candidate.

Responding to a query, an irate President said that he had the backing of CWC leader Minister Arumugam Thondaman, the late P. Chandrasekeran’s Upcountry People’s Front, EPDP leader Minister Douglas Devananda as well as Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralidharan and Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivenesathurai Chandrakanthan. The President pointed out that several other Tamil speaking politicians representing different groups, too, support the government. He said that even the TNA was not fully with the Opposition though its leader R. Sampanthan recently pledged his support to the Opposition presidential candidate. He revealed that several TNA MPs had privately declared their support to him though they didn’t want to quit the party, thereby causing a split.

He dismissed the assertion that MP Mano Ganeshan, a key player in the Opposition alliance had the ground support he boasted of. The President asserted that MPs, who had switched their allegiance to the Opposition, had no real following among the people.
